Named for the president of the first Soroptimist club, the Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award honors girls who are making a difference through volunteer service. Each year, Soroptimist clubs honor girls who donate their time and energy to causes that make the community and world a better place—such as working to end discrimination and poverty, assisting women and children who are victims of domestic violence, or mentoring young girls. The program begins on the Soroptimist club level, with club recipients becoming eligible for additional awards at other levels of the organization. One winner is chosen to receive a finalist award, which includes a contribution of $2,500 to the charitable organization of the recipient's choice. |
VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD NORTHWESTERN REGION
2010-2011 Honoree – Ariana N. Piscitelli
Ariana has many areas where she lends her volunteer efforts: fundraising for Aicardi Syndrome , volunteering at two assisted living facilities, organizing donations to local animal shelters, as well as a horse rescue. She also held a self defense clinic at a women’s shelter.
Closest to Ariana’s heart are her efforts to benefit Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The women in Ariana’s family have been greatly affected by breast cancer. Her mother and grandmother are both breast cancer survivors. Ariana put together a 31-member team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The team was appropriately named “Team Hope.” She raised a total of $1,912 to be donated towards breast cancer research. She continues her efforts by handing out self exam shower hangers to local women in her community.
